Students & Postdoctoral Fellows — Financial Support

Grad student members are eligible for all types of financial aid under certain conditions. Post-doctoral members are eligible for financial support for conferences and FRQNT-MITACS internships (unavailble at the moment), under certain conditions.

Since April 1st, 2025, new terms and conditions (in green) have been improved for financial support for conferences, bonuses for archiving and publication, as well as collaboration. Also, all students, postdoctoral fellows, and Interns members can benefit from training sessions and workshops adapted to the general needs of members, offered by Québec-Océan. 

Collaboration bonus

This bonus is intended to improve co-supervision conditions, encourage collaboration between co-researcher and collaborator members and promote student mobility between co-supervision institutions. The Institut des sciences de la mer (ISMER) and the Université du Québec à Rimouski (UQAR) are part of the same institution. For definitions of co-researcher and collaborator member statutes, please consult the Quebec-Ocean Statutes.

Terms and conditions of the bonus for MSc or PhD students:

  • MSc: $1,500 is offered once to a Master's student if co-supervised by two co-researcher members of QO OR one co-researcher and one collaborator members of QO, affiliated with two different research institutions;

  • PhD: $2,500 is offered once to a doctoral student if co-supervised by two co-researcher members of QO OR one co-researcher and one collaborator members of QO, affiliated with two different research institutions;

  • For a MSc and PhD sutdent, the amount will be increased by $1,000 if the student's direction includes a new co-researcher. A new coresearcher is considered to have 3 years or less of experience as a coresearcher at Québec-Océan.

  • Students eligible for this bonus must apply to receive the grant.
  • The bonus (grant) is paid only once per study cycle per student.
  • The supervision committee of the student must be kept informed of the bonus payment and associated conditions.

Financial Support for Conference

If you are a master's, doctoral or post-doctoral student member, you may receive financial assistance covering 50% of the expenses incurred for your participation in one or two conference(s), up to a maximum of $2,000 by study cycle, according to the following terms and conditions:

  • One support covering 50% of eligible expenses up to a maximum of $2,000, matched by your director;OR
  •  Two supports covering 50% of eligible expenses up to a maximum of $1,000, matched by your director.

The annual budget for conferences financial supports is $50,000.

  • the convention is held out of the Quebec province, unless it is a major international congress or essential to your field
  • you are the first author of a conference or a poster related to your studies
  • your membership to Québec-Océan clearly appears in your presentation (logo available here)
  • you apply before the final submission of your thesis or the end of your postdoctoral fellowship.
  • To benefit from the financial support and promote your work on social networks, you will submit a plain-language summary of your research project (5-10 lines), photo proof of your affiliation with Québec-Océan on your presentation or poster, and photos of the event.

Your application will be reviewed by the coordination of Québec-Océan and approved by your academic supervisor.

Trainings Support

The financial support program of short-term courses is no longer available, to the profit of tailored trainings according to needs expressed by members and offered by Quebec-Ocean

We are creating a catalog of training courses with the help of the Student Committee and theme leaders, based on the needs identified by members (via member survey to come).

The group will be able to offer two or three training courses per year, accessible to all members. Training courses will be rotating from one year to the next to avoid redundancy.

An annual budget of $15,000 is granted for these training courses.

Archiving and Publishing Bonus

If you are a student member, you can receive a bonus for archiving your data and publishing their scientific interpretation (scientific paper).

  • For a MSc student, a grant of 1 000 $ is offered ​for one publication. If you publish a second article, please contact the main coordinator (ULaval) or the assistant coordinator (UQAR).
  • For a PhD student, a grant of 500 $ for the first article and up to 1 000$ for subsequent articles, depending on the number of applications received for the bonus.

This bonus may be obtained once a year, after the end of the fiscal year (March 31, 2025). The budget for these bonuses is $10,000 per year.

To be granted the bonus, you must meet the following conditions:

  • You must inform Québec-Océan if you have already received a publication or archiving bonus.
  • You have archived the data set or model output supporting your publication in a recognized data repository or in the electronic supplement of the journal where the article is published.
  • You are the first author of this scientific article stemming from your studies, one of whose co-authors is a coresearcher member of Quebec-Ocean
  • The article is submitted, accepted or published in a refereed or pair reviewed journal.
  • You mentioned Quebec-Ocean in your address or in the “acknowledgments”* of the publication.
  • You submit your application during your studies or within 1 year of your thesis deposit.
  • To promote your work on our social networks, you will submit a plain-language or popularized summary of the article in order to be granted the bonus.

Your request will be reviewed by the coordination of Quebec-Ocean, and approved by your academic supervisor if the article is only submitted to a journal.

Globalink FRQNT-Mitacs Research Fellowships for International Internship

The objective of this program is to promote the international mobility of students and postdoctoral fellows whose research activities are part of the scientific programs of the strategic clusters funded by FRQNT. Québec-Ocean can thus strengthen its action and influence on the international scene, within the framework of established or developing research projects or partnerships.

 

Target students and postdoctoral fellows

  • Canadians or foreigners: Full-time students registered in a Quebec university, members of the group and directed or co-directed by co-researchers from Québec-Océan.
  • Foreigners: Full-time students registered in a university outside Canada that is a partner of Mitacs*, who wish to do an internship in one of the laboratories headed by a co- researchers from Québec-Océan.

 

Overview of conditions 

  • Internship outside Canada in a Mitacs* partner country for students and postdoctoral fellows enrolled in a Quebec university
  • Internship in Quebec for students and postdoctoral fellows from abroad
  • Duration of the internship from 12 to 24 weeks
  • Start of the internship no later than one year after receipt of the letter of confirmation of the scholarship.
  • 6,000 CAD maximum. Only expenses eligible by Mitacs under this award will be accepted.
  • Research work of the internship in accordance with the scientific program of Québec-Océan
  • Only one application per laboratory
  • Fair and inclusive selection process, allowing for the support of diverse students and post-doctoral fellows
  • Rejection of applications that are incomplete or that are also submitted to other strategic groups or to the Réseau Québec-Maritime.

Evaluation process

  1. Examination of the applications by a jury composed of researchers from Québec-Océan
  2. Pre-acceptance of 4 applications by the jury, plus 2 reserve applications, according to the rules of the program.
  3. Submission of the 4 pre-accepted applications to Mitacs
  4. Final approval by Mitacs
  5. Reserve applications may be funded through the clusters or networks in the event that one or more clusters or networks do not submit the maximum number of applications.

 

Required documents for the application

In a single email to principal coordination, before December 6, 2020. Files must meet the standards (see in form) and meet the evaluation criteria:

  1. Application Form (see the bottom page link)
  2. Research Proposal (see the bottom page link)
  3. CV (see the bottom page link)
  4. BSc transcripts up to the last session completed
  5. Letter of support from thesis supervisor or postdoctoral fellow
  6. Letter of agreement signed by the internship supervisor or host institution, including full contact information and the start and end dates of the internship.

 

Financial process

The scholarship is paid to the applicant or the applicant's supervisor, depending on the university administering the scholarship.

 

Documents to be provided before the internship in Québec for foreign students

In order to receive the scholarship, foreign students registered at a foreign university must present a valid study permit to study in Quebec or a Canadian residence permit.

 

Documents to be provided after the internship

In a single email to principal coordination, no later than 2 weeks after the end of the internship:

  1. A final report that summarizes the project.
  2. A final report with the approval and signature of the participating supervisors
  3. End of project surveys completed by the participant, the home university supervisor, and the host university supervisor.
