Summary |
The art of being a mission leader Our passion in oceanography involves sampling missions in the field, often on boats and ships of all sizes, from small boats to research vessels such as the Coriolis II or the CCGS Amundsen. For a successful scientific mission, it is essential that the organization and communication are impeccable, which is the responsibility of the mission leader. We will share our experiences and tips that contribute to the success of oceanographic missions on ships of different tonnage. We will talk about the planning and preparation steps before the mission, the operations at sea and the actions and follow-ups to be done upon return. We will answer the following questions: What is the role of a mission leader? How to communicate with the other scientists on board, the captains, the crew and the media? How to program sampling operations, follow up, and adapt continuously to unforeseen logistical or meteorological constraints? How to make a mission report and what is its purpose? |
