Climate change and the different activities we carry out on the water and along the coastline put multiple pressures on the marine environment, modifying its habitats, biodiversity and the services it provides to humanity. It is with a view to help society achieve sustainable and safe use of coastal marine environments that Québec-Ocean works on 5 themes that address the needs and concerns of diverse provincial and federal departments, municipalities, ports, management and conservation organizations as well as the general population.
The Governement of Quebec has set the goal of achieving 30% protection of its territory by 2030. In 2024, Quebec launched a call for projects for protected areas on public land, open to all citizens, groups, non-governmental organizations, organizations and municipalities who wish to see Quebec's public lands and seas protected in the long term.
Protected areas are land and sea zones where industrial activities aire prohibited, but which remain accessible to low-impact outdoor and tourist activities. The main objective of a protected area is to protect biodiversity while promoting its sustainable use.
Together, let's make a concrete contribution to achieving Québec-Océan's objective of sustainable and safe use of marine ecosystems, and to protecting our public marine areas.
The call for projects closes on October 15, 2024.
