The Atlantic Ocean is never too wide to establish new partnerships for knowledge sharing and oceanographic research. With the aim of developing oceanographic research collaborations with West Africa developing oceanographic research collaborations with West Africa , the new network Réseau en Océanographie Afrique de l'Ouest-Québec (ROAQ), sponsored by the UNESCO Chair in Integrated Analysis of Marine Systems, was created in 2022 by the postdoctoral reasearcher and member Michel Tamkpanka Tamtare, and Simon Faye (former member, Ph.D. graduate in oceanography).
In September 2024, the Université du Québec à Rimouski (UQAR) welcomed a delegation from the Institut Universitaire de Pêche et d'Aquaculture (IUPA) of the Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar, in Senegal, to further its objectives. Co-researcher Fanny Noisette, UNESCO Chair in Integrated Analysis of Marine Systems, presented the Réseau Océanographie Afrique de l'Ouest-Québec (ROAQ) network, along with the co-reasearcher member and Director of UQAR's Institut des sciences de la mer, Guillaume St-Onge.
Were also present at the meeting, the IUPA Director Alassane Sarr, Benjamin Simard-Jean, Director of UQAR's International Relations Office, and teacher-researcher Pierre-Olivier Fontaine, from the École des pêches et de l'aquaculture du Québec (EPAQ). Visitors also had the opportunity to discover the research facilities of the Pointe-au-Père aquaculture station (UQAR).
