Conférence Québec-Océan | IFQM: Jean-François Briand & Karine Lemarchand

Québec-Océan and IFQM invite you to a lecture by Jean-François Briand (MAPIEM, Université de Toulon) and Karine Lemarchand (UQAR-ISMER) entitled:

"Towards eco-responsible navigation: innovative biocide-free antifouling coatings to counter the transfer of potentially invasive species in the marine environment (PAINTS projects, a France-Quebec collaboration)".

Thursday, February 8 at 12:00 pm.

In person at the Mohammed-El-Sabh room (ISMER) and online.

Abstract:

Controlling the colonization of ship hulls by biofilms and then macroorganisms, commonly known as biofouling, is a major challenge for the preservation of marine ecosystems, as biofouling is recognized as one of the vectors for the introduction of potentially invasive species into these environments by shipping. Over 95% of boats currently on the water use antifouling paints containing biocides that are harmful to both human health and the environment, in order to limit biological colonization on hulls, thus increasing the ecological footprint of shipping. With a view to reducing this ecological footprint and moving towards more eco-responsible, environmentally friendly navigation, it is crucial to have alternative coatings that are effective, durable and easy to use. This conference will enable you to learn more about the results obtained as part of the PAINTS project (France/Québec project, funded by the ANR/FRQ maritime sector program), a project involving researchers from the natural and social sciences, and aiming to offer an eco-responsible alternative to the use of traditional antifouling paints.
