Two Québec-Océan members, Pierre-Olivier Couette and Patrick Lajeunesse (ULaval), along with Étienne Brouard (former member) and their colleagues, have discovered the remains of an ice barrier in Baffin Bay (Arctic). The disappearance of this barrier, whose surface area was more than 300 times that of the island of Montreal, is thought to have contributed to the rapid rise in sea level that occurred 14,500 years ago. Their results, published in Communications Earth and Environment, provide a better understanding of the decisive role played by ice barriers in the flow of glaciers towards the sea and in the rise in sea level.
