Did you know that the Charlevoix-Kamouraska/Bas-Saint-Laurent (CKBSL) seismic zone has a seismic hazard almost as high as the Pacific active zone? A team, including our members Méril Mérindol and Guillaume St-Onge from UQAR-ISMER and Patrick Lajeunesse (U. Laval), mapped and dated submarine landslides in this area to evaluate their timing and their possible triggering by an earthquake. They demonstrated that these submarine landslides were correlated to major historical earthquakes. Their results, published in the journal Quaternary Science Reviews, will improve the assessment of earthquake hazards in eastern Canada.
