The Canada Foundation for Innovation has just granted the Université du Québec à Rimouski more than $210,000 for the acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment to better understand the source, distribution, and impacts of emerging contaminants in the St. Lawrence River estuary and Arctic ecosystem. Professors Zhe Lu (UQAR-ISMER) and Youssouf Soubaneh (UQAR) will be in charge of this infrastructure project. The new research equipment will be used to analyze and characterize different materials such as microplastics or persistent emerging contaminants, including plastic additives and industrial by-products. Their work will shed new light on the nature of contaminants resulting from human activities and improve our understanding of the risks they pose to the environment.
