Selenoneine is an organic compound that is considered as a powerful antioxidant that may help to reduce the health toxicity of mercury. High levels of selenonein have been observed in Inuit women, and in the maqtaaq (beluga skin and blubber) that they traditionally eat. Mélanie Lemire and Jean-Éric Tremblay (U. Laval) will study the effects of selenoneine on human health, the mechanisms involved, and its origin in the Arctic marine ecosystem. Because of the constraints imposed by COVID-19, they present their research project in video to develop collaborations and involve the Quaqtaq community in their work.
