The Science Team of the Canadian Research Icebreaker CCGS Amundsen made the difficult decision to cancel the first leg of the 2017 Expedition, due to the extreme ice drift caused by climate change. The ship would have arrived too late in Hudson Bay to meet the research objectives of the Hudson Bay System (BaySys) project. Led by the University of Manitoba and expected to last 4 years, BaySys is based on a precise sampling schedule. The project involves 40 scientists from 5 Canadian universities, including several students who are forced to modifiy their master's or doctoral projects. However, the Amundsen will continue to serve scientists in the Arctic as part of the other segments of the 2017 expedition.
